Uber-dick Joffrey finally got what was coming to him—at his wedding to Margery, no less—thanks to Olenna Tyrell. Watching him slowly die of a terrible poisoning made so many cackle with so much glee.
How you like them apples, Cersei?
Perhaps the truest example of a love-him-and-hate-him character, Petyr Baelish played the game better than anyone. He was also with us for seven seasons, offering a completely virtuoso performance. These acting skills reached their crescendo in his death scene. Fantastic.
This one happened all the way back in season 1, but for non-book readers, there’s no forgetting how utterly shocking it was to have the principal protagonist of a television series get beheaded in the first season. It was many folks’ first introduction to the wild world of George R.R. Martin.
Farewell, Sean Bean.
The Red Wedding goes down in Game of Thrones lore as one of the most visceral scenes of the show, top-to-bottom—the surreal nature of seeing Talisa Stark’s pregnant stomach punctured over and over by the dagger, Robb’s struggle to crawl to her, and then, most notably, Catelyn’s grief and eventual death. Powerful stuff.
Just watch. That’s all you have to do to understand this one.
Splat.
Call it a “bonus” entry if you want, or not, but this one stands altogether outside any Top 10 because of how special it is.
Hodor was perhaps the most loyal character in all of Game of Thrones. He protected Bran Stark and never asked anything in return, and in a true act of altruism, gave his life up to the undead to save the young cripple and Meera. Of course, simultaneous with his death we uncovered the secret behind his origin story. Masterful writing.
